I lost the campaign: one of my friends got it.
On that day, I was not exactly nervous, even in front of more than a hundred people. When my turn came, I was all right too. Only when I opened my mouth did my words tumble over one another. But in the end I practically yelled at them (i.e. said it really loudly, with passion and force.)

After the whole thing, my friend came to me and said: "After your speech I think I'm going to join the army!" From another: "You're like the second Aung San Suu Kyi."

I lost anyway, but am still a member. Eh, well.

Bad luck Star! However don't be too disappointed, it is often not the people heading the ship that have the greatest impact. You devote yourself to serving the school and you'll be better than any School Counsil president could be.
And don't gloom to much over what you may deem public speaking failures. I actually still shake at the thought of my last real attempt... But what doesn't knock you down will only make you stronger, and you seem like a very good diplomat, so take heart. Keep at it and you will hone your skills.
I often now take forms of speech making like I rehearse music. Read through your speech until you stumble, and read over the passage (aloud of course) a few times. Something else you can try as you begin to develop confidence is to record yourself and listen critically. As you familiarize yourself you will know your text better, and eventually learn it off by heart.
One question. Who is Aung San Suu Kyi?

I believe she is a woman that wants more liberty in Myanmar/Birma and she's currently placed under house arrest.

Star too bad that you've lost, but remember you can still be of great importance.
In history, many things were accomplished by people behind the throne.
So, you still have the chance to make some huge things possible:)

She is more than a woman, Oggie. She's our Elessar.

Wow, guys. I never actually thought of it that way. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I really was feeling very gloomy after it, though my face revealed nothing (except for my sharp-eyed teacher, who saw I was down immediately) .. I thought I'd failed my grandmother or something ... but I suppose I can still contribute something to the school in my position now.
Gandalf was not the head of the White Council, yet he accomplished more than Saruman ever did. I should take his example ;)

So you should, Star! I've seen in all that you've done an amazing perseverance and ambition, which make me think you must be a truly remarkable person. I'd say, way over other people your age. It is extraordinary how you always want to be part of everything, and you really do have a contribution in so many things.

The picture was beautiful, Beth! Thanks so much for sharing it.

Cheers to you, John! Seems like yesterday you were celebrating your 777th post (was it?)

Random news: We sold juice and spring rolls today to raise funds. We made 31000 kyats. Not too bad for a start. (The Student Council last year left us only 3000!!!)

Congrats, I have no idea how much 31000 kyats is, but it sounds like much!
Especially when you look at the 3000 from last year.

Keep up the good work:)

Wikipedia says the following:

Wikipedia wrote:
Since 2001, the official exchange rate has varied between 5.75 and 6.70 kyats per US dollar (8.20 to 7.00 kyats per euro). However, the street rate (black market rate), which more accurately takes into account the standing of the national economy, has varied from 800 kyats to 1335 kyats per USD (985 to 1475 kyats per EUR). Black market exchange rates (USD to MMK) decrease during the peak of the tourist season in Myanmar (December to January). The following exchange rates are official and are primarily stagnant. They do not indicate performance of the actual national economy.

# 1 USD = K 6.51
# 1 EUR = K 9.3723
# 1 GBP = K 10.5613

(Rates are as of 4 January 2010.)

According to The Irrawaddy, which provides accurate estimates of the black market (street rate, and hence unofficial), are as follows:

1 USD = K 960 (Rates are as of 20 November 2009)

It looks like there is a big economic problem there... anyhow.

Thank you Star! Actually my first such celebration was thanks to Alavaro and it was for my 666th post. I kept doing it for every such number where all figures were the same, but now I'm over 1000 I have no idea how I'll celebrate (I don't want to wait until 2222) - so probably I'll just use numbers that are appealing in format.

I've had three exams already. I did well in one of them, and relatively well in the other two, which were more difficult than expected. Thank you all for your encouragements!

I have a beautiful grandson! He was born February 9th and weighed in at 7 lbs. 4.3 ounces. He has a precious face and blonde hair (like his dad). Will try to post some pics as soon as I can.
Can't wait to take Andrew to his first renaissance festival, read The Hobbit to him and watch the LOTR films with him. It's great fun to pass on a love for all things Tolkien.
