There is not much more I can add to Aeglos's words, Meli, so I second him.

Telco, congratulations on your 'forum birthday'. Actually I had seen it coming some time ago, but it slipped my mind when the day actually came.

Congrats Meli!!! May we have a new Ringer among us in a few years!! Haha....

Happy forum birthday Telco. We look forward to many more to come!

So, I'm back from the excursion that I forgot to tell you guys I was going on. This was our last - we're graduating - so everyone had looked forward to it. But it really wasn't enjoyable. For one, we'd been to all these places before, so it's a bit ... well, you know, boring. For another, one of my friends caught the flu and spread it around to fifteen more people. Which means that the whole excursion consisted of coughs, masks, temperature and fevers. Even I caught one near the end ... The only productive thing I did was collect information for my newspaper (it's an assignment). The worst thing - I had to room with this girl who is really annoying, and can't stop going on about appearances ...

This is me and two of my friends at Mandalay Hill...

It's nice to have you back, Star. You did seem to vanish for some time, really.

Some news: today, the 1st of March, is also traditionally considered the first day of spring in Romania, although of course astronomically the spring only comes with the equinox on the 22nd of March. One tradition related to this day is to offer to women a 'mărţişor', which is a symbol of spring. Traditionally the real thing was only a two-coloured thread (red and white), but now it moved to more elaborate devices.

Anyhow, I wish all the ladies on the forum a good spring:

I thank you, John. Have a good spring! :)

I forgot to mention that THE NINTH GRADERS ARE DOING AN ANALYSIS OF THE HOBBIT'S FIRST TWO PARAGRAPHS!!!! And they get to draw Bag End!! And we didn't get to do it last year!! It's plain torture - I nearly went crazy over it. I say my teacher was doing it on purpose. She knows how much I love Tolkien's works!!!

We do not do Tolkien at school. Not even at English. I find this too bad, but of course there ae many other students who do not like the fantasy genre.
We are allowed only to read one fantasy book (of the 5 books you have to read for English)

Well, Oggie, it seems fair enough to me. It is in the purpose of the subject to offer you as broad an image as possible on the English literature, not to make you experts in only one genre. I never did Tolkien in school, though I would probably have been frustrated if we did, by the fact that compared to my classmates, I knew a lot more and we would have kept it at a basic level.

I did do a paper for English in the field of Tolkien, however, that I had to present at the end of the 12th grade. I spent a long time on it (it dealt with the Cosmogony and I was very proud of it back then, but once I got to read more and go deeper into the matter, I realised just how much more could be improved in it). In its 29,500 words, of which around 9,000 are appendixes, I tried to make an analysis of the Creation myth in the Ainulindale and other works. I guess an average reader would find it too abstract, while someone like Galin or telco would find it childish and perfectible (such as I do myself now.)

Yes of course it is fair, and I haven't read any Tolkien book for english, not even a fantasy one (or you have to say that war of the worlds by Wells is fantasy, which it is I guess).

Couldn't convince my English teacher to do any Tolkien. But in 10th grade I was to do a big Danish assignment and I chose Tolkien as my subject. I was supposed to write 15-30 pages, but wrote about 50. My teacher enjoyed it very much :)

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." - JRR Tolkien

"Too bright were the eyes of Arien for even the Eldar to look on, and leaving Valinor she forsook the form and raiment which like the Valar she had worn there, and she was as a naked flame, terrible in the fullness of her splendour."

we could make the test, John. maybe you could post it, or you could send it as an email-attachment. i would like to read it, if you want anyone to do so.
just in general: maybe the fact that it is abstract for most readers and perfectible for others is the stregth of the essay, because it can be read by all of them.

@Arien: that is a lot of writing. What was your subject more exactly?

The year nines at my school have been studying The Hobbit, last year and also this year, I think. I was really annoyed that I missed out by a year... Though I must admit I've already done about four or five book review assignments on the hobbit, and numerous other projects on Tolkien and tLotR...

It was mostly about Tolkien and his life as a family man, professor and writer. I wrote about the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit as well and of course I talked about my own experience with the man and his work.

I got a lot of material from different biographies, and it wasn't the most thought out project. I just sort of went with it and the pages kept filling up.
If I had to rewrite it now, with more writing experience I would cut half of the biographical stuff and do a lot more on the higher taxonomical levels.
It was my first big paper.

My teacher said he'd only read The Hobbit at the time, but after reading my paper he would give LotR a try.

Indeed, the biography part is almost redundant because it is so completely presented in other sources - I felt so at the time I wrote my own work, and I only had a few pages of it.

Anyhow, did you do it in Danish only?

Yes, it's only in Danish.

Well, oulmo, that is good news regarding your army. As for the book, I am sorry to hear they still did not do anything to it, but I guess right now there is little left to do except wait or find another publishing house, which is not easy.

@Arien: thank you for the answer. Too bad, though, as I can't read Danish and I would have liked to take a look at your paper...
