Today is september 2nd. Today it's 35 years ago that the world lost one of the greatest men.

I've been sort of sad all day, but at the same time I can't help being happy beause of all the happiness that Tolkien brings me everyday. In so many forms.

I think there should be a tradition for this day, like the birthday toast.

Don't be sad dear Arien..Do what i did every year on that day..Made that picture in my mind of professor Tolkien walking with Edith his wife beneath the trees in Eldamar..He find the true happiness..Let's hope we will..

It is from one of Tolkien's letters, Letter 213 to Deborah Webster (25th October 1958) "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien" Edited by Humphrey Carpenter with the Assistance of Christopher Tolkien.

Hi all, on the subjectof pictures of JRRT there is currently a touring exhibition of portraits etc from the National Portrait Gallery under the banner "Writers of Influence" aside from Tolkien it includes Douglas Adams, CS Lewis, and Philip Pullman.
"Writers of Influence"

Its been in Sheffield and at present is in Southampton until 26 September before moving on to Plymouth and then Sunderland. The NPG has a virtual version you can visit too at www.writersofinfluencevirtualgallery.blogspot.com
