I Am What I Am from the musical La Cage Aux Folles.

Anybody anywhere near New York has to go see it right now! I saw this production three times in London, and it is my favourite production ever! It's fabulous!
If I only had the money to go I would.

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." - JRR Tolkien

"Too bright were the eyes of Arien for even the Eldar to look on, and leaving Valinor she forsook the form and raiment which like the Valar she had worn there, and she was as a naked flame, terrible in the fullness of her splendour."

This amazing song is by my friend Eric M Combs. He does all the parts except the bagpipes.

He has other great songs performed completely by him. (Not sure how to make that sentence grammatically correct but I hope you understand what I'm saying.) Hope you all enjoy and check out his other tunes!

Oulmo, the song you posted is very nice! I think I heard it before (in a commercial maybe), but I did not know its name.

Arien, 'I Am What I Am' sounds interesting. I can only presume the whole show is great, having been to this kind of musical performances before. If it comes to Romania, I will go, probably.

Beth, sadly I could not listen to your song, I have no idea why it wouldn't load. Oh, and also... I see my discussion on grammar left scars on the forum. I appreciate the joke!

Finally, having been directed to the last album by Scorpions (thank you, oulmo), I also discovered the previous one - Humanity: Hour I, which I consider better throughout. So my proposed song is from that album: We Will Rise Again - Scorpions.

Perhaps this will work, it should take you to my list of favorite songs by Eric.

Try a few! Hate Crimes is brand new, Jericho, Turns, Antiphon, and Pile are some of my most favorite.

John, I truly struggled with that sentence and didn't feel it was right but wanted to convey the idea.

I should say that is an interesting song. At first it looks like the message does not really go with this type of music, but I guess it can be made to fit nicely.

The song of the day is in some way related to my forum-birthday. Here it is:

Ducu Bertzi - Pe cine şi câte cărări (No matter who and how many paths I leave behind)

Translated into English, it goes like this:

No matter who and how many paths I leave behind, I care not;
Alone I wander the world. Though sometimes it burdens me,
I am joyous even if I know well that the road will end,
I will go towards the horizon. And let it fly from me.

Chorus:
I sing without caring if there's anyone listening,
I only like autumn, when I walk through the fallen leaves.
I dream of a love that does not and will never exist,
Though ever colder and lonelier I am on my road.

Books teach me nothing; only the beauty of the forests
Gives me counsel,
My soul is a meadow, my heart a river bed and a vineyard,
All the sadness of the world is dear to me. Let it come.

Chorus:
...

When I drink from the wide fields and I taste the hot springs
Nothing enlightens me like the moist in the distance,
I like people when I know that far away from them, from place to place
A hand overcome with fever is hiding.

Chorus:
...

But there is no light or sadness nearby
And so I sit on the shore of dreams and waters,
And therefore no matter who and how many paths I leave behind, I care not
And I build my lodging next to the flowers.

Chorus:
...(x2) (repeat 'ever colder and lonelier I am on my road' and fade)

- - - - - - - - - -

There are some metaphors in the Romanian song which may sound strange in translation, but I tried my best. Anyhow, the song speaks about the everlasting journey, where life is allowed to have its way. So is my journey alongside you all.

Once again, I wold like to introduce you to some of the best Romanian songs. The following is sung by a band called Phoenix, which is considered one of the best in Romania. The song is quite old, from sometimes in the 60s: they don't make music like that nowadays (not in Romania, at least - though we still have some good artists).

Nebunul cu ochii închişi - Phoenix (The madman with closed eyes)

On a mountain, in a country
far, far away
A man stands, his eyes closed,
Foretelling our future.
People heed him not,
Taking him for a madman,
For his words fall
like cannonballs.

Chorus:
He stands alone and tranquil,
But in his closed eyes
He sees the world's ending,
The madman with his closed eyes.

Days pass on the mountain,
And his voice sounds clearly,
Foretelling many things.
The whole world
Stops not to listen
Thinking him a madman who says
much nonsense.

Chorus:
...

On a mountain, in a country
far, far away
A man stands, his eyes closed,
Foretelling our future.
People heed him not,
Taking him for a madman,
For his words fall
like cannonballs.

Chorus:
...(x3) (last two repetitions of chorus are without the final line 'The madman with his closed eyes')

This song is more like song of the month for me. I simply can't not listen to it. It's on hour-long repeats on my stereo/computer/Iphone.

I think so. Don't know any other Mykonos.

I agree to both of you, Arien and oulmo, having listened to the song and having visited Greece several times. :)

I would like to post another Romanian song, also pretty old and with a strong message.

Pământul deocamdată - Mircea Vintilă ('The Earth of our times')

Our life is brief,
Let it be clean;
Some live stealing,
Some only from what they give,
Some people are poor and some are rich;
Cowards spit on the brave.
You who fly to the Moon
Who see no limit but the sky,
You climb on the backs of new slaves.

Chorus:
There's everything for us on the Earth,
Some things are good and some are worse,
Some good, some worse,
We have prisons and freedom,
We have 'can' and 'cannot'
We have mud and stars.

You who fly to the Moon,
Bearing our achievements,
Do not forget your brothers
Starving on the planet.
It is their bread that you eat,
Flying among the stars.
Your flight is vain
When the underdeveloped
Crawl on the Earth.

Chorus:
...

The world is full of injuries
And of expert medics,
And of masks, and of borders
And of great innocents.
Because you give birth to children,
Protect them by fighting;
Cast down the living monsters
Who have since always
Spread widowhood on the Earth.

Chorus:
...

Between those who pull
And those who are pulled,
There is no room for a flag,
There stands an abyss of steps.
They are welded together
With a crooked ideal,
Just as the bond is strong
Between the convict and the rope
And between the whip and the horse.

Chorus:
...

You who work have
Sweat on your breast
Just as the precious furs
Adorn the breasts of the high ladies.
Some take, some make
Some sleep and some are;
Between angel and devil
Labours the poor man
Tied to the Earth.

Chorus:
There's everything for us on the Earth,
Some things are good and some are worse,
Some good, some worse,
We have prisons and freedom,
We have 'can' and 'cannot',
We have ruins and citadels,
Geniuses and dumb people,
Blowing wind and wind not blowing,
Martyrs and leeches,
Injustice and justice,
We have 'can' and 'cannot'
We have mud and stars.

Have you heard Whiskey in the Jar by Metallica?

Here's the new one from Avenged Sevenfold, I really like it!

I listened to the songs you posted. Both versions of 'Whiskey in the Jar' (the one posted and the one by Metallica) are good, but the former has an original flavour.

As to my song of the day, it is sung by a Romanian artist, but this time there is no need to translate, because it is in English. It is an older song, from 1993:

"Say Something" - Laurenţiu Cazan
