Thanks guys.
Trust me, I am going to try hard to read the Silmarillion this summer. I find Tolkien's work hard to read but once I've read it a few times I should be ok. The first two times I read Lord of the Rings I really struggled but now I can blitz through it. It's strange... Tolkien is pretty much the only author I have difficulty reading but he's also one of my favourites.

Sorry for being a little late (glances at watch) - Whoa, a lot late, but WELCOME TO THE FORUM, IDHRENETH!!! We hope you find this community friendly and homely and close knit (which it definitely is).

And I shall close the ranks. Sorry for my late respond, but my internet has failed me for the last one and a half week. But hopefully things are allright right now.
So, welcome to this forum Idhreneth. I have probably read the smallest amount of Tolkiens work around here. Children of Hurin, the Hobbit and the Silmarillion. No not the LOTR, I still have to try that someday. But I agree with you. These books are sometimes hard to read. Still the Silmarillion is worth it. I daresay that it is one of the best mythological stories I know. (Yes of course not many fantasy stories nowadays have such a thing but still).

Well, good to see you're here and no doubt comfortable and at home with my excellent friends, Idhreneth. Sorry that I didn't get a chance earlier to introduce myself. I've just finished exams, so now hopefully will have more time. A word of advice on the Silmarillion; it is not really a chronological book as far as reading is concerned. Browse through the contents and see what interests you. There are some great stories in there. Some may be a hard read. My first attempts were both suffocated by a chapter called Of Beleriand and its Realms. This wasn't really necessary but for some reason I was too used to reading books from cover to cover: I even tried it with the Bible once. There are better, smarter, more efficient and engaging ways to get through literature.

Hello and welcome to all the new folks, sorry I've not been here very much; a certain 2 year old is keeping me very busy or very tired! It's great fun but does leave one short of 'get up and go' to do stuff (much of which is already committed elsewhere). The Tolkien Society President 'in perpetuo' JRR Tolkien. Children ... really are big responsibilities. Personally, I can't stand annoying kids. And I happen to know a lot of them. What do you expect when my Mom teaches those little grade people? :P 1, 500 posts! Go Oulmo!

Thanks Oulmo and congratulations on passing 1,500! My count does kind of show how rarely I've been able to get here eh? ;-) The Tolkien Society President 'in perpetuo' JRR Tolkien. Bringing together 'those who would wander with friends in Middle-earth.'

It's fine. I am happy that there is not a rank highest than 'advanced member" cause we dont post random, stupid things just to increase our's rank.

I agree to you, oulmo, and I have seen it happening on another forum that people just posted to get to a certain rank. As to my personal 'post celebration' (which seems to have spread a bit after I insisted on it), I do it for fun only. This makes me think that the saying that 'less is more' has a point here: we have so few options, features and administrative aspects to worry about that everything just goes by easily and smoothly. Rarely have I seen a fight here, and those that took place were extinguished quickly. By the way, since I did not do it until now, I welcome you back, Colly - although we did exchange some words in another topic already. Good luck with raising your child; I remember well your second post on the matter (after the birth of your baby, which I actually found with the Search function). You were posting in 'Play' and also explaining that you were in a hurry: Colly wrote:(sneaking very quickly inbetween feeding, changing, sleeping baby and keeping my wife fed - oh and naps. 27 day old babies are very hungry) So, time flew by. I hope it's been to the best. Not that you haven't been around since then, but I thought it would be nice to recall.

Thanks John, yes she's a lot more than 27 days now. And in May (when we had folk here for doing the TS stall at the Middle-earth Weekend) she was saying 'Tolkien', and 'Silmaril' (on account of one of my sweatshirts). Hi everyone, I'm Andrew. First read LotR ten years ago and was immediately hooked! Tolkien formed the focus of my degree dissertation and now I'm collecting his books with a passion! I am an English teacher by day, and my recent promotion to Head of English at my secondary school means my wife is off riding her horse whilst I pursue this collecting hobby with a couple of hundred pounds a month to splash out. I just started a blog on collecting Tolkien: http://collectingtolkien.blogspot.comI only started collecting seriously this month(!) but I am buying books every month, and already have a half dozen titles (going to add the rest over the next week or so). My plan is to do something I don't currently see on the net: provide lots of pics of books, and 500 words or so on the book itself - what makes it different to others, a bit about its history etc. Currently I'm having to go to a few different places to get all of this info. Anyway, please consider adding yourself as a 'follower', as this will be a blog that gets regularly updated for a long time to come!

Welcome, Andrew, and thank you for the information. I am a huge upholder of photos - indeed one of the topics I created here - Tolkien *DELUXE* Editions is very graphical-intensive. I applaud your idea and will check your blog as soon as time allows.
