Alright, this forum is running out of topics.

This is a little game in which one member posts a sort of riddle for a character, and another guesses, and if one person gets it right, that person posts another sort of riddle. Any questions?

I'll go first:

"I am older than the trees, my face is fair:
Golden as the woods I live in is my hair,
I come from a place that I'd forsaken,
And now I desire to go back there again.
I rejected what I desired:
And back again I'll go to the sea."

Go! Applause

Possibly Galadriel.

Very nice topic, Star! So, if I'm right, should I post another riddle?

All right, then:

I made this up specially, and I guess I let in a bit too much to be a real riddle to any of you, but here it goes (I'm also putting forth a bit of poetry, and that might be risky among so good poets as I've seen on this forum):

In Blessed light a vow he cast
And Doom decreed he should depart;
Through Deathly Cold he came at last
To Middle-earth with weary heart.

When war was lost, his hope was spent.
In wrath he rode; his challenge blew
With mighty horn and sword untamed:
The Dark Lord from his vaults he drew.

In shadow of the Iron Hell
Blue shone his sword like lightning fast:
Stroke after stroke his hand dealt there;
But strength deserted him at last.

His valour passed away of old,
Over his deeds a shadow rolls.
Yet once again Evil grows bold:
The King is now in Mandos’ Halls.

Guessing shouldn't take long.

At first I thought it was Gandalf, but now I think it's Feanor. Right or wrong, John?

P.S. A very nice piece of poetry, John!

Well, not Feanor, but you're not too far from the mark: the absolute key to this 'riddle' would be the lines "When war was lost, his hope was spent. / In wrath he rode". But no war had yet been lost when Feanor was slain. Surely you'll get it now.

Hmmm... no. OK, last hint, and no more until either you name the right person or someone else tries (so as not to give away the answer myself): it's got to do with the First Age.

I'll be thinking, not so much guessing as yet ...

Okay, one last guess before I succumb into the darkness.

Finrod Felagund??

I'm afraid not. Don't succumb, just recall 'The Silmarillion' (I can only believe some of the events there are no longer fresh in your memory - I had the same problem with LotR, which I am right now re-reading) and then you will not even have to guess. The character is strongly revealed by the actions I have alluded to above.

I know it's either Finarfin or Fingolfin, but I'm trying to remember who did what... It's been to long since I really dwelled into the older stories. I'm going with Fingolfin, because he was the one leading the elves across Helcaraxe and I'm guessing that's what you're referring to here: "Through Deathly Cold he came at last To Middle-earth with weary heart" and I'm pretty sure he was the one who fought Morgoth as I'm also guessing you're referring to in the second stanza.

It's a beautiful poem, John.

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." - JRR Tolkien

"Too bright were the eyes of Arien for even the Eldar to look on, and leaving Valinor she forsook the form and raiment which like the Valar she had worn there, and she was as a naked flame, terrible in the fullness of her splendour."

Thank you very much, Arien. And you're right, it was Fingolfin (Finarfin never left Valinor). To explain just a bit what everything in my poem means:

Fingolfin vowed to follow Feanor, being his younger brother. When Feanor swore the Oath, Fingolfin felt obliged by his own vow to come after Feanor (at least part of the reason). But Feanor took the ships of the Teleri and crossed the Belegaer, leaving the rest of the Noldor following Fingolfin to perish into the desolate north of Aman, or return in shame to the Valar. This they would not do, and so they pressed on over the Helcaraxe. Fingolfin's wife was lost upon that road. So it was that Fingolfin set foot on Middle-earth 'with weary heart'. The Dagor Bragollach, Battle of Sudden Flame, ended badly for the Elves. That's when Fingolfin, their High King, losing his hope in victory over Morgoth, and seeing the truth in Mandos' words (that no power of theirs could destroy him who had once been Melkor, a Vala), rode in desperate wrath upon the Anfauglith, and enemies fled before him believing it was the Vala Orome come upon Middle-earth. He reached Angband and summoned Morgoth in one-to-one battle, and Morgoth came, though he was afraid. 'Blow after blow' - Fingolfin wounded his foe seven times, but Morgoth had dug pits in the earth with his mighty hammer blows, and finally the Noldo King, tired, stumbled in one of these and fell. Morgoth put his foot over him, and Fingolfin dealt there a final blow, piercing Morgoth's foot, before he himself died. His spirit went to Mandos.

All right, you next, Arien!

Damn, now I have to come up with something... Okay, but it won't be as creative as yours, John.
Hmmm...

Okay, this is one of my favourite characters!

Dark and doomed is the stories you know.
The gift of a different race given to me,
when I approached to help.
Strong is my arm and the weapon I wield
and from there I got my name.

I thought of Beleg too, but I could not make a clear choice, because I can't associate any 'gift of a different race' given to him. Would you care to enlighten this matter? I'm beginning to forget, too.

Death. It's called the "gift of men" several times in the Silmarillion.
