Who is your favourite character from Tolkien's many books? I have several though highest on the list are Bard, Thorin, Gimli and Gandalf. I don't have many characters to pick from though as I've only read the Hobbit so far and have amost finished The Fellowship of the Ring. Túrin may be added to that list when I get Children of Húrin.

I have always liked Gimli as well. But there are many many characters to choose from.
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Couldn't have guessed that. Lol (though my favourite isn't Glaurung).

Pippin is my favourite probably because he's the character I most identify with - often joking at inappropriate moments but with a strong loyalty to his friends. And I'd like to believe I could be half as brave. Every time I read the battle before the gates of Mordor when Tolkien scales the whole war down to this single character who we have journeyed with and loved I'm not only amazed by Tolkien's brilliant technique but also moved by his huge humanity. 'The Eagles are coming!' - the real turn of the story for me.

Mine is not Túrin - I actually chose the name because of its meaning. Let's see.. my all time favorite character would probably be Beren, and runner-ups would be Bilbo Baggins amd Beleg. I have no idea why those three, but I do like most of the characters Tolkien describes (save probably Feanor) - there's an appeal in every one of them, no matter good or evil (or both).

He gives them such backstories and charm that its hard not to provide a list of every Tolkien character in existence.

Bilbo Baggins, pure and simple. He appeals to me as a representation of the Professor and thus I find that I am attracted to him moreso than any other character.

Interesting point Adanedhel about appeal being in both good AND evil characters. Of the baddies I always like reading Saruman and Wormtongue but my favourite evil character is The Mouth of Sauron - he only has a cameo but his duel of words with Gandalf is brilliant.

The character I like the most is Gandalf of course. The most interesting character is Gollum, I think. His split personality is depicted in a very detailed way. The most intriguing character for me is Tom Bombadil, whose personality is still a mystery and whose behavior and abilities are unpredictible (how often a freak in colorful clothes can defeat a ghost ??:)) Tolkien's characters in general are complex and all of them have something appealing and unusual what attracts readers.

I would definately have to agree with Lexington. Sam is my favorite character in any of the books. His love, bravery, and loyalty towards Frodo is amazing.

Túrin, hands-down. He's such an interesting and tragic character. I also like Brandir from the Narn i Chîn Húrin for similar reasons.
Other than that, I like Feanor a lot too. Another antihero. And from LotR, my favourite character would be Gandalf, I think it's fascinating how he's this angelic, otherwordly being and probably the most important person in the history of the third age but you get to know him, so to speak, on quite a personal level as he is part of the Fellowship.

Mine is Túrin, without question. I'm a sucker for antiheroes and he's one of the most interesting I've ever read. I've been dreaming for years that something like this book would come to fruition.

Sam Gamgee is, in my opinion, the greatest and wisest of all heroes in Middle Earth. Without his love, loyalty and common sense, Sauron would not have been defeated. Greatness was thrust upon him and he wore it with humility.
