Gil-galad was an Elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's field
were mirrored in his silver shield.

But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are.

Allrighty then...

I'm 25, male and a proud Belgian. :)
I've been reading Tolkien since I was 12. Got instantly hooked by the rich mythology. Only things missing from my collection is the HoME series (only have the first 4), and the Silm and CoH in English. Got all the rest both in Dutch and English.

LotR is like... my bible. No blasphemy intended. :)

Ranged with spear and sword
stood Morgoth's sable-armoured horde:
the fire on blade and boss of shield
was red as blood on a stricken field.

Beneath a monstrous column loomed
the throne of Morgoth, and the doomed
and dying gasped upon the floor:
his hideous footstool, rape of war.

About him sat his awful thanes,
the Balrog-lords with fiery manes,
redhanded, mouthed with fangs of steel;
devouring wolves were crouched at heel.

And o'er the host of hell there shone
with a cold radiance, clear and wan,
the Silmarils, the gems of fate,
emprisoned in the crown of hate.

I'm a woman of mature years! First read Tolkien in my late teens and love BoLT1 the best, especially Cottage of Lost Play which I've been know to read aloud. I also, in the past, used to write a lot of sub-creative stuff based on Tolkien's missing bits - Where had Aragorn's people been hiding all the centuries since the fall of Fornost and Annuminas for example.

Hi, I'm female, Welsh & 30 (just!) and have been a Tolkien fan as long as I remember. My mum read The Hobbit to me when I was very young and I first read LotR when I was 8, but didn't manage The Silmarillion until I was 11. I've also read Unfinished Tales, HoMe, in fact just about anything Tolkien related I see. I mostly like the films, and can generally forgive those bits I don't like.

I used to post on the Tolkien Newsgroups, alt.fan.tolkien and rec.arts.books.tolkien, but got scorched in the great Balrogs Wings flame wars and finally gave up when people started calling each other 'book-wraiths' and 'film-goblins'.

I read a lot, favourite authors include Ursula le Guin, Philip K Dick, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Haruki Murakami & J G Ballard and I also like like comics and manga - Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, CLAMP. I like photography and collect tarot decks - my dream deck would be a Tolkien deck with art by Alan Lee. I also do the odd bit of writing.

I think the proper question is, do you feel new to this forum? And are people familiar with you?

Hi, I'm a 23 years old male from the Netherlands. Been reading the books several times during the last 10 years. I guess my favourite part of the mythology is the first age, and especially Feanor and his sons. Although I'm a fan of the books rather than a fan of the movies, I went to New Zealand a the beginning of this year to see the landscapes and to find the locations of the movies. This was great and made my interest in Tolkien even bigger. That's why I really missed someone to share my 'tolkien-passion' with, so I tried the internet and found some interesting topics on this site.

Howdy there, folks! It's good to seem some new faces amongst the old, errr, I mean more familiar ones.

I just returned from visiting my son and his family in the Netherlands, wiretapped. They live in Beek.

We visited Namur, Belgium, celebrimbor and liked it alot. I even got to speak a bit of french. Europe has such history-rich places! I love it when I get to go there.

Of course some of us don't count as new but haven't been here very often to seem familiar.
I'm a forty-something Tolkien fan who first read TH and LotR in 1982 who likes to collect books, calenders and diaries. Oh and I joined the Tolkien Society shortly after that first reading and haven't looked back as it's meant meeting lots of fun, intelligent, people and having a great time (eh Silivren).

Hi Everyone,

I'm 24 from New York and I have been enjoying Tolkien's works since I was about 12 years old when required summer reading before going into the 7th grade was The Hobbit.

I've read The Hobbit/LOTR probably 5-6 times over the course of these years; but, as I am done with school and finally get settled and have free time for reading what I want to and my time isn't consumed with reading for school I want to make it an effort to read the LOTR once every year. I'm finally going to take the time to read the other Tolkien works that I never got around to.

I'm also starting my Tolkien library and recently I've purchased the 1938 U.S. 1st edition/1st state of The Hobbit. I figured I would kick it off with the one that started it all for me.
