It's just a question ... many of us read Tolkien day by day, I think, but sometimes what else do you read? Uh, I think it's mainly fantasy, and here are some of mine:

Eragon, Eldest, by Christopher Paolini
The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (I know this is not actually fiction)
And many others which really don't come to mind as yet ... I really don't know how.

All that is gold does not glitter
Not all those who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither
Deep roots are not touched by the frost

From the ashes a fire shall be woken
A light from the shadow shall spring
Renewed shall be blade that was broken
The crownless again shall be king.

Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen,
yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron!
Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier
mi oromardi lissë-miruvóreva
Andúnë pella, Vardo tellumar
nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni
ómaryo airetári-lírinen.

Sí man i yulma nin enquantuva?

An sí Tintallë Varda Oiolossëo
ve fanyar máryat Elentári ortanë,
ar ilyë tier undulávë lumbulë;
ar sindanóriello caita mornië
i falmalinnar imbë met, ar hísië

Namárië! Nai hiruvalyë Valimar!
Nai elyë hiruva! Namárië!

Has anyone else read Les Miserables by Victor Hugo? I loved that book and think I will read it again when I finish this Tolkien cycle I'm in now.

... the seas of the Bent World fell away beneath it, and the winds of the round sky troubled it no more...

Yes, I've read it a couple of times. Les Miserables is a great book.

The best I've ever read (other than Tolkien's, defenitely!) are:

Dark Angel (Sally Beauman)
Ireland (Frank Delaney)
the Other Boleyn Girl (Philippa Gregory)
The Alchemist, the Zahir, the witch of Portobello (Paulo Coelho)
Memoirs of a Geisha (Arthur Golden)
The Prince (Niccolo Machiavelli)
Rebecca (Daphne du Maurier)
Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte)

Recently I'm reading The Aeneid by Virgil.

When the cold of winter comes
Starless night will cover day
In the veiling of the sun
We will walk in bitter rain

But in dreams
I still hear your name
And in dreams
We will meet again

When the seas and mountains fall
And we come, to end of days
In the dark I hear a call
Calling me there
And back again

I totally forgot about Homer and Virgil. I'm a sucker for greek and roman mythology.

How do you like The Aeneid?

It's a great book. I've reached the part when Aeneas disembarks at Carthage and meets with Dido, in my country we call her Elissa(she was a Phoenician princess in South Lebanon).

I've also read the Iliad and the Odyssey.
I'm also a sucker for greek and roman mythologies. When I was about nine I've memorized all the names for every possible god or goddess in both mythologies along with all their legends.
Thank goodness I've found someone who shares my enthusiasim!
I thought i was the only one!

Oh no you're not! :)
Once I knew a lot more about the whole thing, but I forgot most. But I did just have a class this year where we studied this subject. We read Oedipus in full adn some of the songs in the Aeneid and Illiad, which I've read before.
I would just love to set up a production of Oedipus :)
Can you imagine beeing at the great theatre festivals of ancient Grece!

Wow, you have a grand imagination Arien!
I hope you get to fulfill your dream soon.
I too wish to visit Greece someday and see its festivals.
I have awesome pictures of it at home; Greece is marvellous!

They still do the big festivals?
Hey, some of you Greek guy must help here. What do you call those theatre festivals for Dionysos of ancient Greece in English?

Actually, Orestes is playing at a theatre not far from me, so I'm going in a week or so.

If I could choose another time to live in, I would love to live as a man around 400-300 BC. In Athens ofcourse.

Well, hell yeah..In fact i was been this summer, between the 22nd and 24th of June,in a fest called Promitheia(Προμήθεια) events of honour and elevation of Greek worldview, that take place in a small grove in the roots of the mount Olympos..At the first day the vestival began with the lighting of the Promithean Fire and after we watch ancient sports events, such as the race, the throws and the fight..The recitation of the Orphic Hymns was beautiful..At the end of the day it started the artistic events entitled "the Promethean Fire:Aizoon and eternally existing'and Hesiod, cosmogonic trip in the birth of the world..The last day we witnessed the marriage of a young couple according to the norms of the ancient tradition and a rite of naming by Apollo was organized in which a lot of us received a greek name,in a sympolical manner..More details from Monday, cause i'm going on a trip this weekend,to Delphi, the center of the world..Namarie..

And elves

Interesting to see what other people like to read when they are not reading Tolkien. For myself I love reading both fact and fiction and think my tastes are fairly catholic, Just to give you some idea I like Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Colin Dexter, John Buchan, Bernard Cornwell, P D James, J K Rowling, R L Stevenson,Ian Fleming, "BB" and Rudyard Kipling. There are others but I think that will do for now.

I just read whatever's on the shelf. We have enough books here to last me a few years more. Not really anything famous or anything, so I'm not gonna list everything I've read before.
It's mostly Belgian authors anyway.
